I know I am not alone in the belief that protecting our environment and ensuring a sustainable planet for future generations needs to be a top priority. Last year I voted to ban fracking in our state and as the Trump administration moves towards dismantling all the protections put in by President Obama, I have worked with my colleagues to ensure that we leave our children in Maryland an environmentally safe state to call their home.
I am honored to share with you the news that my efforts on this front have resulted in my receiving the endorsement of the Maryland League of Conservation Voters (MLCV) for the upcoming 2018 election. The MLCV is a leading legislative watchdog in Annapolis that uses political action and education to protect our air, land and water.
A few of the steps we took during the 2018 Legislative Session include:
* Holding oil companies liable for damages they may cause. The Trump administration’s decision to open the Atlantic Coast to offshore oil and gas drilling has caused concern about the environmental repercussions of oil spills like those we have seen in other parts of the country. I voted for legislation this year that declares “offshore drilling activity” as ultrahazardous and an abnormally dangerous activity.
*Protecting Clean Wind Energy. Along with my colleagues, we defeated efforts to halt the State of Maryland from moving forward on the continued development of offshore wind energy projects. This clean energy will provide thousands of jobs and millions in tax revenue as we look towards being the wind energy hub of the East Coast.
* Membership in the U.S. Climate Alliance and the Paris Climate Accord. I supported legislation that requires approval from the Legislature to withdrawal from either of these important environmental initiatives, providing a check and balance on a potential executive decision to withdraw our state.
As the Democratic Senate Majority Leader, I will continue to use my role as an opportunity to help set legislative priorities and I will continue to work to ensure that our environment remains front and center on that agenda.
