Although we have had a few snow days for our students, the State Senate is in session. I am working on a critical new initiative to allow our children to have the strong start they need and deserve – the expansion of access to pre-kindergarten education.
Early education is one of the best ways to address school readiness and to help close the achievement gap. A solid body of research bears out the importance of high quality pre-kindergarten options for young children, particularly those with the greatest needs: Children from low-income families and children with disabilities. By making sure that students enter school ready to learn, we can help close the educational achievement gap, increase graduation rates, and set young people on a path that leads to college, solid careers and economic success.
In Prince George’s County, we began this process in 1980 and currently we serve approximately 6,000 students in a combination of early childhood education programs including Head Start, half and full day pre-kindergarten programs. For the 2013 -2014 school year, we created an additional 8 full day programs sites. But we know it isn’t enough. We still have many children with unmet needs in our county and throughout our state. That is why I will work to help ensure the passage of Senate Bill 332, legislation that I co-sponsored, that will provide opportunity to all our children.
It remains a great honor to represent our community in the Maryland Senate. If I can be of service to you or anyone you know, please call my office at 301-858-3631, or email me at Douglas.Peters@senate.state.md.us.
